The transportation bill introduced Tuesday, February 12 by House and Senate DFL leaders would:

-- Increase the current 20 cents-a-gallon gas tax to 22 cents in the spring and to 25 cents on September 1.

-- Impose a gas tax surcharge of up to 2.5 cents a gallon to pay the debt service on funds to be borrowed for a $2.2 billion, 10-year road- and bridge-construction program.

-- Levy a half-cent sales tax in the seven-county metro area to finance bus and rail transit and local road projects. Counties outside the metro could impose the sales tax for specific transportation projects if voters approve.

-- Increase motor vehicle license renewal fees for new cars and trucks. Fee caps of $189 and $99 would remain in effect for currently registered vehicles.
