ABOUT VAnessa:

My name is Vanessa Kaiser, I’m a Journeyman Laborer in Local 563. I made the switch in 2020 from the health care field to construction.

I chose construction because I grew up watching my father work as a carpenter. He taught me the value of hard work, pride in what you build, and the ability to earn a good living. I wanted to follow in his footsteps and build a stable future for my family. Joining the Laborers Union was the best decision I made.

As a single mother of two, financial stability and independence mattered. Through the Laborers Training Center, I completed over 344 training hours, including welding and earning my Class A CDL. This career has given me confidence, security, and the ability to give my kids opportunities, from vacations to countless fishing trips.

The best advice I received came from my Business Agent, who encouraged me to take as much training as possible to become more valuable. I followed that advice, and it made all the difference.

Construction is challenging but rewarding. I encourage high school graduates to consider the trades or a union. You can earn while you learn, gain real skills, avoid college debt, and build a strong future.

Advice for women interested in construction: Don’t let the hard days win. Believe in yourself, ask questions, speak up for yourself, and never stop learning. You belong here just as much as anyone else. Stay focused, finish what you start, and always watch out for yourself & your brothers' and sisters' safety on the job.
