BACKGROUND

In 2009, the Building Jobs Coalition (BJC) was created to advocate for growing jobs in Minnesota through design and construction of commercial, industrial, residential and institutional projects.  The BJC attracted a diverse group of contractors, building trade unions, architects, engineers, economic developers and public officials focused on growing jobs in the state of Minnesota.  Founding leaders included Beverly Hauschild-Baron (American Institute of Architects Minnesota), Harry Melander (Minnesota Building and Construction Trades Council), and Dave Semerad (Associated General Contractors of Minnesota).

TODAY’S NEED

Since 2009, many sectors have recovered from the height of the recession.  However, the construction and design industries continue to lag behind.  As the economy has improved, a skilled workforce shortage is an emerging problem.  The design and construction industries are responding through investment in advanced technologies that increase worker efficiencies and productivity.

Members of the BJC have revved up their organizations’ recruitment, training and retraining efforts. Design and construction firms along with their partners in the trades employ strategic, managed capacity of workers in project planning to ensure when one project or phase of a project is completed, workers can be shifted to the next project or phase of a project.
